Half day rafting in Moab.

The short answer

Two half day trips run near Moab and both are Class I to II. The Moab Daily launches minutes from Main Street. Fisher Towers is 25 minutes up Highway 128 beneath 900 foot sandstone spires. Both take children from around 4 or 5 and need no experience.

If you can spare the drive, take Fisher Towers. Same water, same price, considerably better scenery. Take the Daily when time is tight.

Our take: these cost the same, last the same and ask the same of you. Fisher Towers gives you noticeably better scenery for a 25 minute drive, so unless the schedule is genuinely tight, it is the better booking of the two.

Prices are typical ranges across permitted outfitters. Each sets its own rates and adjusts them seasonally, so confirm the current price when you book.

Rafting With Children

The only trips that take small children.

Age minimums

These two are the only guided trips near Moab that routinely take children as young as 4 or 5. Full day trips usually start at 8, Westwater at 12, and Cataract between 12 and 15. If you have small children, this page is your whole list.

Do they need to swim?

Not on Class I to II water. Everyone wears a properly fitted Coast Guard approved life jacket and guides are swiftwater rescue trained. Tell the outfitter in advance if a child is a non swimmer so they can fit the jacket carefully and seat them accordingly.

Will they be bored?

Possibly, on the flat stretches. Honest answer. Good guides handle it with swim stops and by letting children paddle. If yours needs constant motion, the full day version with a proper swim break is the better booking.

Sun, not water

The real hazard is exposure. High SPF before launch and again mid trip, a hat with a strap, sunglasses with a retainer, shoes that stay on. Bring dry clothes for the drive back. See the safety guide for the full list.

Fitting It In

Rafting and a national park, same day.

This is the main practical reason to choose a half day over a full day. A full day trip consumes six to ten hours and leaves you tired. A half day leaves most of the day intact.

PlanHow it works
Raft firstMorning float, back in town by early afternoon, then Arches for the late light. Delicate Arch at sunset is the obvious pairing.
Park firstEarly start in Arches before the entrance queues build, then an afternoon float. On Fisher Towers this also gives you the better light on the towers.
CanyonlandsIsland in the Sky is about 30 miles from Moab, so it pairs with either departure. Dead Horse Point sits on the same road.
Two rafting daysSome people do a half day early in the trip to see whether they enjoy it, then book Westwater later in the week.

Allow buffer either side. Outfitters ask you to check in ahead of departure, and getting off the river and back to town takes longer than people expect.

Questions

Half day rafting FAQs.

Which half day rafting trip is best near Moab?

Fisher Towers if you can spare the 25 minute drive, because the scenery is significantly better for the same time and money. The Moab Daily if convenience matters more, since it launches within minutes of Main Street. The water is essentially identical on both.

How long is a half day rafting trip?

Three to four hours door to door, of which roughly two to two and a half are on the water. The rest is check in, the safety briefing, the shuttle and getting off the river. Most outfitters run a morning and an afternoon departure.

Are half day trips exciting or just scenic?

Mostly scenic. A few Class I to II riffles will splash you and bounce the boat, but nobody is holding on for dear life. That is exactly why these work for young children and nervous first timers. If you want genuine whitewater, book Westwater Canyon instead.

How young can children be on a half day trip?

Most outfitters take children from around 4 or 5 on both of these stretches, the lowest minimum of any guided trip near Moab. Some raise it during spring high water, so confirm for your specific dates if your child is close to the limit.

Is lunch included on a half day trip?

No. Lunch is included on full day versions of these same stretches, not the half day. Eat before you go or plan for a late lunch in town afterwards. Outfitters do provide drinking water.

Can I do a half day float and Arches in the same day?

Yes, comfortably, and it is the most common way people structure the day. A morning float leaves the whole afternoon and evening for the park, or take the afternoon departure after an early park visit to avoid the entrance queues.

Short on time, not on scenery.

Half day trips have the best availability of anything here, though morning slots fill in spring and autumn. A week or two ahead is sensible.
