Planning Guide

Half day or full day? How to decide.

The short answer

Take the full day, unless one of three things is true. It is roughly double the water time for well under double the price, it includes a proper riverside lunch, and it covers better river. On cost per hour it is the better buy by a clear margin.

Book the half day instead if anyone in your group is under about 8, if you want to see Arches or Canyonlands the same day, or if a full day in Moab heat is more than the people you are with actually want. Those three answers cover most of the exceptions.

The Comparison

What actually differs.

Both run the Colorado River near Moab. Same guides, same equipment, same launch in many cases. Here is everything that is not the same.

Half dayFull day
Time on the waterRoughly 3 to 4 hours including shuttleRoughly 6 to 7 hours including shuttle
Typical price$79 to $125 per person$130 to $240 per person
Minimum ageOften 4 or 5Usually 8, or 12 for Westwater
LunchNot included. Water providedIncluded. A proper spread on a beach
Difficulty availableClass I to II onlyClass II to III, or Class III to IV on Westwater
DeparturesMorning and afternoonMorning only
Rest of your dayFree. Half a day left for something elseGone. This is the day
Best forYoung children, tight schedules, first timers testing the waterAlmost everybody else

The row that decides it for most people is the last one but one. A full day is not a longer outing, it is your whole day, once you count the drive out, the shuttle and getting back to town. Plan around that rather than around the hours on the water.

The Value Case

Why the full day is the better buy.

The half day looks cheaper and is not, once you price what you are actually buying. Confirm current rates with your outfitter, since all of these figures move seasonally.

River coveredThe upper, gentler sectionThat section plus the better water below it

Add lunch to the half day column and the gap closes further. The full day gives you more time, more river and a meal for a price difference that is smaller than it first appears. This is the same arithmetic that makes multi day expeditions better value than their sticker price suggests, worked through in the cost guide.

The exception worth naming. If you would spend the second half of a full day wishing you were somewhere else, none of this arithmetic matters. Value per hour only counts when you want the hours.

What It Feels Like

A half day, hour by hour.

Times are approximate and vary by outfitter and season, but the shape of the morning is consistent. This is a morning departure on the Moab Daily.

RoughlyWhat is happening
Check inMeet at the outfitter in Moab. Paperwork, a short safety briefing, life jackets fitted, wetsuit if the water is cold
First 30 minutesShort drive up the river road to the launch. The canyon opens up on the way and it is worth watching
On the waterPaddle briefing, then a gentle start. Class I to II throughout, with the guide reading the river and telling you what you are looking at
Middle stretchSwim stop on a warm day, which is the highlight for most children. Splashy sections between long calm floats
Last hourThe canyon walls at their best. This is where the photographs come from
TakeoutOff the river, shuttle back to town. You are in Moab by early afternoon with the rest of the day free

Take the morning if you can. Afternoon departures exist and they are hotter, brighter and harder on children. In July and August that difference is not marginal.

What It Feels Like

A full day, hour by hour.

The first half is recognisably the same trip. What you are paying for is everything after lunch.

RoughlyWhat is happening
Check inEarlier than the half day. Same briefing, same kit, plus lunch loaded onto the boats
MorningThe stretch a half day covers, at a more relaxed pace because nobody is watching the clock
MiddayPull onto a beach or bench for lunch. Generally a substantial spread rather than a packed sandwich, and a genuine break from the sun
Early afternoonBack on for the section a half day never reaches. More continuous water, bigger features, fewer other boats
Late afternoonThe best rapids of the day on most full day Colorado runs, with the canyon walls lit from the side
TakeoutOff the river and shuttled back, arriving in Moab in the early evening. You will be tired and sunburnt if you were careless

Westwater Canyon is a different animal again. It is a full day by clock time but a much longer day by drive time, around 60 miles each way, and the river is Class III to IV with a minimum age of 12. Do not book it thinking it is the Moab Daily with more hours.

Six Cases

Your situation, our recommendation.

Half day

Family with young children

Under 8 and the choice is made for you. Even at 8 or 9, a morning half day with swim stops usually produces a better memory than a long day. See rafting with children.

Half day

One day in Moab total

A morning float plus an afternoon in Arches is a genuinely good day, and the only way to get both. Give up the extra river time rather than the park.

Full day

Couple, no fixed schedule

The easiest recommendation on this page. Lunch on a beach, a whole day in a canyon and no reason to hurry. This is what the full day is for.

Full day

Group of friends

Better value per person, more time together, and most outfitters discount at a group threshold around eight or ten. See group bookings.

Full day

You want real whitewater

Then it is Westwater, which only exists as a full day. Class III to IV, seventeen rapids, minimum age 12. No half day here comes close.

Depends

Nervous first timer

A half day is the lower commitment way to find out whether you like it. If you know you will, the full day is more river for the money. Both are Class I to III and genuinely approachable.

Now Pick One

Which trip in each category.

If you chose half day

Moab Daily if you want the shortest drive and the most departures. It is the default for a reason and it is a good trip.

Fisher Towers if scenery is the point. A slightly longer drive, roughly 25 miles, in exchange for the best half day views in the region. Worth the extra.

If you chose full day

Moab Daily full day for a relaxed Class II to III day with lunch. Suits mixed groups, families with children over 8, and anyone who wants scenery more than adrenaline.

Westwater Canyon for genuine whitewater. Fit adults and teenagers, permit capped so book ahead, and the only Class IV day trip in the area.

Questions

Half day or full day FAQs.

Is a full day rafting trip worth the extra money?

For most people yes. A full day is roughly double the time on the water for well under double the price, it includes a riverside lunch, and it covers the better section of river below where the half day takes out. On cost per hour it works out cheaper. The exception is if you would spend the afternoon wishing you were somewhere else.

How long is a half day rafting trip near Moab?

Roughly 3 to 4 hours from check in to being back in town, which includes the shuttle to the launch and off the river at the end. Actual paddling time is a little less. Most outfitters run both a morning and an afternoon departure, and the morning is the better choice in summer.

How long is a full day rafting trip?

Roughly 6 to 7 hours with lunch included, and realistically the whole day once you count getting to the meeting point and back. Westwater is longer again because the drive is around 60 miles each way. Do not plan anything demanding for the same afternoon.

Can I do a half day rafting trip and visit Arches on the same day?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses of a single day in Moab. Take the morning river departure and you are back in town by early afternoon with time for the park. Do not attempt this with a full day trip. See rafting around Arches and Canyonlands.

Which is better for young children?

A half day, clearly. Full day minimums are usually 8 while half day trips often take children from 4 or 5, and stamina runs out well before the takeout on a long day. Book the morning departure, because afternoon heat is what actually spoils family river days.

Is lunch included?

On full day trips yes, and it is generally a substantial spread laid out on a beach or bench rather than a packed sandwich. Half day trips do not include lunch, though outfitters provide drinking water. Tell them about dietary requirements when booking and most will accommodate them.

Do half day and full day trips run the same river?

They start on the same stretch of the Colorado. The full day continues past where the half day takes out, onto water with more continuous features and fewer other boats. So the first half is genuinely similar and the second half is what you are paying the difference for.

Which has better whitewater?

Full day, and it is not close. Half day trips near Moab are Class I to II by design, since they are built around families and first timers. Full day options run Class II to III on the Colorado, and Westwater Canyon reaches Class III to IV. Difficulty also shifts with water level through the season.
