A Billion Years of Geology — Run in a Day

Westwater Canyon is unlike anything else on the Colorado River. Where the surrounding Utah canyon country is built from red-orange sandstone laid down 200–300 million years ago, Westwater cuts through something far older and far darker — the Vishnu-age Precambrian granite and schist that forms the gorge floor and walls, approximately 1.7 billion years old and among the most ancient exposed rock in the American West.

The result is a canyon that feels primordial — narrow, black-walled, shadowy, and alive with whitewater. In just 17 miles, the Colorado River drops through 17 named rapids, including the notorious Skull, Room of Doom, and Sock-it-to-Me. High water in spring pushes these toward the upper end of Class IV; low summer flows create a more technical, read-and-run experience.

Best of all, the put-in is only 60 miles from Moab — making Westwater Canyon the most accessible full day whitewater adventure in the region.

"Westwater is the sweet spot — it's got real whitewater, dramatic canyon scenery, and it's right on the doorstep of Moab. It's the trip that keeps people coming back."

III Class

Marble Canyon & Staircase

The warm-up act. A series of rolling Class II–III rapids set inside the narrowing granite gorge — long enough to get your technique dialed before the big water hits.

IV Class

Sock-it-to-Me

A powerful Class IV hydraulic with a sharp lateral wave that grabs rafts and pivots them sideways. Technical, punchy, and deeply satisfying when you run the line clean.

IV+ Class

Skull Rapid

Westwater's signature drop — a steep, channeled Class IV+ with a notorious hole at the bottom that has flipped more rafts than any other rapid in the canyon. The run of the trip.

IV Class

Room of Doom

A tight, rocky gorge section where the Colorado squeezes between black granite walls and the current accelerates into a series of powerful Class IV drops. One of the most dramatic stretches of water on the river.

III Class

Funnel Falls & Last Chance

The canyon's farewell — two final Class III rapids as the gorge opens back to sandstone country and the takeout draws near. A perfect send-off to an unforgettable day.

Early Afternoon

The Big Three — Skull, Sock-it-to-Me & Room of Doom

This is what everyone came for. Three back-to-back Class IV+ drops in the heart of the granite gorge. Your guide walks you through each scout, positions the raft, and then — you run them. Skull Rapid, the canyon's crown jewel, comes last in the main sequence and delivers the biggest punch. After the adrenaline settles, the canyon begins to open, the walls drop back, and the Colorado returns to its familiar red-rock character. You'll be talking about these rapids for years.

Westwater Canyon FAQs

How difficult is Westwater Canyon?

Westwater Canyon runs Class III–IV at most flows, with Skull Rapid reaching Class IV+ at high water levels in spring. It is appropriate for guests without prior rafting experience when on a guided trip, but some guests find it more intense than expected. If you want something more mellow, the Moab Daily or Fisher Towers float might be a better fit. For even bigger water, see Cataract Canyon.

How long does the Westwater Canyon trip take?

Plan for 8–10 hours total including drive time from Moab, pre-trip briefing, time on the water (approximately 5–6 hours), a riverside lunch stop, and the return shuttle to Moab. Early morning departures are standard — most trips are back in Moab by early evening.

Is Westwater Canyon appropriate for teenagers?

Yes. Most operators set a minimum age of 12 for Westwater Canyon. Teens who are comfortable in water, physically active, and up for a genuine challenge tend to absolutely love it. It's one of the most popular teen adventure trips near Moab.

What is the best time of year for Westwater Canyon?

Spring (April–June) delivers the highest, most powerful flows and the biggest waves through Skull and the Room of Doom. Late summer and fall offer lower, more technical water — still excellent but with a different character. Westwater Canyon permits are limited by the BLM, so advance booking is essential regardless of season.

Can I book a private Westwater Canyon trip?

Private charters for Westwater Canyon are available for groups. Visit our groups page for custom pricing, or contact us directly to discuss your group's needs.

What makes Westwater Canyon different from other Colorado River trips?

The geology sets it apart. While most Colorado River canyons near Moab are carved through red-orange Jurassic and Permian sandstone, Westwater cuts through 1.7 billion-year-old Precambrian granite and schist — the same basement rock found deep in the Grand Canyon. The visual contrast of black canyon walls against blue-green water is unlike anything else in the region. Combined with Class IV whitewater, it makes for one of the most distinctive river trips in Utah.
